Sacrocolpopexy – Pectopexy

Sacrocolpopexy – Pectopexy

These are techniques aimed at restoring the anatomy of the female pelvis. They provide correction in case of prolapse of the uterus, bladder, rectum or all three together.

Prolapse of the pelvic organs is mainly due to the relaxation of the tissues due to age and the number of deliveries.
Applying these techniques, we reinforce the pelvis by using a synthetic mesh (eg, polypropylene), which connects the uterus, bladder, and rectum with various ligaments inside the woman’s pelvis.
The first technique developed for this purpose was sacrocolpopexy where with the mesh we support the various organs in a joint of the spine at the level of the pelvis.
It remains the technique of choice (gold standard), since we have excellent results with over 20 years of experience in the global literature.
It is estimated from studies that the anatomical recovery rate for more than two years after surgery is 90-100%, the satisfaction rate of women is 70-100% while the recurrence rate ranges from 0-12%.
These results are far superior to the classic method of colporrhaphy, where recurrence rates can reach 50%.
A newer technique, which is gaining ground in recent years, is pectopexy, in which the synthetic mesh is fixed to ligaments (ctenoids) on the side walls of the pelvis. This is a technique with very good results and with the advantage that it does not cause constipation problems after surgery.

Recovery

Both techniques are now performed laparoscopically by specialized gynecologists with excellent results and rapid recovery. In this type of surgery, postoperatively the patient can resume her daily activities after 24-48 hours but avoid lifting weights for at least 4-6 weeks afterwards.
